Winter Weather Brings Winter Reading

February is Black History Month, but that doesn't have to mean dry history books. The library has a wide variety of modern black authors to fulfill your reading desires. Want a new YA fantasy obsession? Check out Tracy Deonn’s Legendborn series. Looking for a little romance? Toni Shiloh delivers with the inspirational The Love Script. Fresh takes on a classic more your taste? Read James, by Percival Everett, for a retelling of Huck Finn, from the slave Jim’s perspective. Need a thriller to get your blood pumping in the frigid weather? Try S.A. Cosby’s Razorblade Tears or All the Sinner’s Bleed. And don’t forget to check Libby for access to audiobooks, e-books, and magazines galore!

We are at the halfway point for our Winter Reading Challenge. Children are turning in completed papers, having read a total of 675 minutes - that’s over eleven hours of reading time. Way to go, kids! Haven’t started yet? There is still time to pick up a sheet and get reading. Started, but not finished yet? Don’t worry, you have all of February to finish. Adults can challenge themselves as well with Winter Reading BINGO, with adult rewards available, too.

We were joined today by Dessa Montgomery from the Iowa DNR for a program about Winter Wildlife. Don’t worry if you missed it, she will be back on Thursday, Feb. 5th at 4pm.

Thursday, Feb. 5th brings us back to Parea for Shelf Indulgence, now with special guests! Joining us this month is Glenwood’s own contemporary romance author Debra Hines! She will give a talk “Sled Dogs and Their Mushers” about her newest book Maren’s Team. Set on Minnesota’s

North Shore, she tells the thrilling story about a woman musher and her lovable group of sled dogs. Debra’s fascination with the sport of dog sledding and its history inspired this presentation.

Monday, Feb. 9th sees the Silent Book Club move down the street to Vine Street Cafe. New this month, we invite attendees to bring a book to trade! Many SBC events begin with a book swap, so bring a book from your shelf and trade it out for a new-to-you read during the 6-7pm social hour. Then order a drink or snack, settle in, and get ready for one glorious hour of silent reading.
